The economic damage from the Los Angeles wildfires is expected to reach an alarming $57 billion. That’s nearly three times the cost of the 2023 Hawaii wildfires ($14 to $16 billion).

The devastating blazes have already burned more than 27,000 acres, including the upscale Pacific Palisades area, where the average home is worth about $2 million. The disaster sent Edison International’s stock price down 10 percent, causing widespread concern among investors.

Parts of Hollywood have also come to a virtual standstill. Glitzy events including the Oscar nominations, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and various movie premieres have been canceled or postponed. Most importantly, one of the region’s biggest industries, film and TV production, has ground to a halt.
